Matthew Tyas

Matthew Tyas has been making and designing ceramics for over a decade and says:

‘The Sea and Sky collection is yet another way of expressing and exploring my love of the natural world, through an eclectic collection of contemporary Blue and White ceramics. Each unique piece explores the realms of Sea and Sky, which I’ve tried to imbue with the values of calm contemplation and subtle activity. It’s my aim to ensure that each work is executed with the greatest care and attention to detail. This collection is not about high-volume production, but a celebration of the individual object and all its subtle qualities.’

Matthew, like many craftsmen, is largely self-taught and has had his own studio facilities for over 5 years while also studying ceramics at Master’s level. He is currently based in Cornwall undertaking PhD research in collaboration with University College Falmouth and the Leach Pottery, specifically looking at: ‘Designing 21st Century Standard Ware: The Cultural Heritage of Bernard Leach and the Creative and Economic Benefits of Digital Technologies’.”
